Barbara Freeston Bio

I moved to Montreal (from Toronto) to study at McGill, graduating with a Bachelor of Science (Honours Biochemistry). I met and married a Montreal man, author David Freeston. We have just celebrated our 30th wedding anniversary.

I moved to Dorval in 1981 in search of green grass and fresh air close to the city for our 15-month old, and very quickly realized we had lucked into an exceptional community.

Both children - son Eliot (27) and daughter Sydney (24) - are successful graduates of the English public education system from kindergarten through CEGEP. Both then elected to take undergraduate studies at the University of Western Ontario in London, Ontario.

Since 1975, I have managed a small tropical plant care and landscape business in the greater Montreal area.

I first became interested in educational governance with the Board of Directors of Dorval Day Care. Gradually, over the years that my children were in high school, I got more deeply involved, adding Regional and Central Parent Committees to my efforts at Orientation and Parent Committees.

With my son a CEGEP student and my daughter a high school senior upon formation of the linguistic school boards in 1998, I was presented with the opportunity of a lifetime: to take part in the building of a brand new school board, gleaning the best from each of the six incoming boards.

I was elected Commissioner to the Lester B. Pearson School Board for Ward 6 in June, 1998, and was acclaimed for the second term in November, 2003.
